Who is Zadig?
Zadig (often mispronounced as Zàdig—or even mistaken for Zelig) is the protagonist of Voltaire’s philosophical tale of the same name. For the French philosopher, Zadig represents rational and reasonable thinking: a just, tolerant, and principled man, unafraid to challenge those in power to defend what is right (though things don’t always go his way).
Thanks to his keen eye and sharp mind, Zadig makes unexpected discoveries – just as often happens in science – and even manages to escape a death sentence.
Voltaire writes that Zadig “was content with the style of reason.”
For us, embracing the style of reason is both a guiding value and a method: it shapes what we do and how we do it.
Our Values and Style
We believe in critical and thoughtful thinking, openness to dialogue, intellectual independence, the pursuit of the common good through active participation, and the sharing of balanced, high-quality information.
From Voltaire, we’ve taken not only our name and motto, but also his tone: sober and never strident, at times ironic, but always rich in meaning and substance.
The style of reason doesn’t shout to be heard, nor is it cold or detached. It starts by listening carefully to needs and seeks out effective, fair, and sustainable solutions through rational – and reasonable – thinking.
Our Goals
Zadig is especially active in the fields of medicine, public health, and science. We are committed to providing accurate, critical information and exploring new ways to communicate and educate, with a strong focus on digital formats.
– spread high-quality information
– foster scientific literacy
– support health promotion
– encourage innovation
– and enable meaningful participation in shaping the future of health, science, and the environment.
